Another excellent article, Steve. Lots of truth. I think the most I've made is $35K for a year--though I've always been "part-time," since I really started writing after retiring from my FT job. This year I'll make little, as I had back problems and just had surgery. Still, I have a case study assignment currently and did some technical writing for an engineering firm I work with. I'm writing (so slowly) a book on water careers and thinking of a water blog for fun.
Steve, thank you for this article. It was so encouraging because—according to your timeline—I’m write (you get that, right?) on track. It’s good to hear the reality because the onslaught of “I made 100k in my first three months!” can make you feel like you must be doing something wrong. But the truth is that it’s normal.
You bet I got that write, LOL. Hey, take it one step at a time. And don't get discouraged! I just had someone contact me on LinkedIn today about a potential gig. Do what you can to get the word out. Remember... the turtle won the race, not the rabbit. :)
I appreciate your honesty, detail, and advice so much! This is what we need to know, and what we wish someone had told us. Thank you for being that person!
Danette, thank you for saying this. There is a great opportunity to make money freelancing. I just want people to know that it takes some work and dedication your business. Be sure to read Sunday's post where I explain where I came from, where I am now, and what I did to get there. Wishing you the best of success!
Thank you. There's a great story in "The Magic of Thinking Big" where the gal broke sales records "because no one told me I couldn't." I love your pragmatism. You let folks know what they CAN do. Thanks again
Thank you, thank you Steve! Finally someone who is willing to give the low down about freelancing. Everybody make it sound like a goal mine, which it is not. It takes business sense and knowing the ins and outs of the business you are helping to market their service or product more so than how many words to produce results. All these takes time, experience and strategy.
Mei, freelancing can be quite profitable. And it's definitely possible to make a six-figure income. But as you mentioned, there is more to it than just the writing. Hopefully people will understand that and build their businesses the right way. Thanks for your comment!
Steve, I appreciate your straightforward approach & your willingness to share that knowledge (especially the hard stuff) with those of us trying to make sense of it all! Thanks!
Thanks, Steve! This is good stuff and so true.
But, you can buck the odds if you choose to.

I think the book and the blog are excellent ideas! Be sure to let me know when you go live with them.
